Balloon drums can turn a quiet afternoon into a jam session!
materials:
round container (you can use cups, yogurt containers, coffee tins, food cans etc.)
balloon (depending on the size of your container you'll either need a small balloon or a larger one)
markers/crayons
paper or wrapping paper
scissors
glue or tape
chop stick
get to work:
1. You want to begin by cutting the paper so that it wraps around the cylinder cover the top (and if you'd like, the bottom).
2. Decorate the paper with markers, crayons, stickers, whatever you'd like.
3. Cut the balloons tail off and cover the top of the container.
4. Wrap the paper onto the cylinder. Here is a good tutorial on how to cut and wrap cylinders since their shape makes it a bit rough: how to. You'll want to leave the top open, but wrap the rest of the cylinder.
5. You can either glue or tape the paper on to the cylinder. I chose to tape it because my 2 year old doesn't have the most patience in the world. However, if you choose to glue, a little glue on the edge where the paper meets should be enough as long as the paper is wrapped around tightly.
6. Get out your chopstick, you're ready to drum!
To be honest, we didn't really make it to steps 4,5 and 6. Max was quite content with the balloon covering the yogurt container.
Because the balloons are quite snug on the container these make great shakers too! Take an empty food can and remove the top and bottom. Cover one side with the balloon, fill with some rice and cover the other side with another balloon. Get shaking!
