ABOUT: WEE HEART ART
Wee Heart Art started in 2010 as an arts and crafts blog for preschool aged children. Since then it's changed a bit - now it's an arts and crafts blog with a foundation in art history.
I'm sure you're wondering Really? Art history for preschoolers? To which I say YES!
Art activities are an excellent way for kids, even very young kids, to explore their world and to learn about history, geography, science, math and literature.
So how do we do it? Well through three types of experiences - ones that help you CREATE, ones that INSPIRE and ones that encourage your young ones to EXPLORE.
I'm a romantic, an idealist, a goof ball, insanely sarcastic and extremely curious. From an early age I've loved creating and crafting and have been doing it in some way ever since. I was raised in sunny Tucson, AZ, where I developed a love of Mexican Folk Art and bright orange sunsets. I attended the University of Arizona where I studied Art History and Psychology and I have a masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from CSU Sacramento.
If you'd like to get in touch you can find me here: WeeHeartArt@gmail.com
- EXPLORE - When you see this tag you'll be linked to videos, articles and activities that encourage children to explore an artist's world. You'll be invited to walk through a museum with your child and play "I spy" or encouraged to go on a field trip in your own neighborhood and look for art.
- CREATE - The create tag is going to link you to art projects based on a specific artist. You might find a lesson on watercolors with Monet or earthworks with Smithson, every project is age appropriate for a 4-12 years old and comes with a lesson on the artist's life and works.
- INSPIRE - Under this tag you'll find links to videos and information about artists, books that you can share with your child and even some games!
So let's get to work. Whether you're an avid art lover or a newbie who's interested in learning more, let's work together to help you and your child explore, create and be inspired by the art that's all around us!
ABOUT: AMANDA
I'm a romantic, an idealist, a goof ball, insanely sarcastic and extremely curious. From an early age I've loved creating and crafting and have been doing it in some way ever since. I was raised in sunny Tucson, AZ, where I developed a love of Mexican Folk Art and bright orange sunsets. I attended the University of Arizona where I studied Art History and Psychology and I have a masters in Marriage and Family Therapy from CSU Sacramento.
From 2006-2015 I taught art education to preschoolers at a Montessori school in Berkeley, CA. There I developed lesson plans based on the masters, taught my students about sculpture, painting, and mixed media by studying artists like Rodin, Picasso and Matisse. I found that art lessons could be much more than an opportunity for many things, self expression, learning, socializing etc. My students learned about history, geography, science and literature all by simply pairing each lesson with an artist's work.
Today we live in Louisville, KY and I work part time as a counselor. When I'm not counseling I'm most likely spending time with my family, painting with my sons, exploring museums, reading historical fiction or watching Alastair Sooke talk about art.
LET'S WORK TOGETHER
I'm always interested in new projects and sharing ideas with other people. Do you have an art themed birthday you're planning or a lesson plan for your home or classroom you'd like to develop? Ask me! I would love to help you create something great!
