papel picado

Do you celebrate Dia De Los Muertos? Growing up in the Southwest there were sugar skulls and papel picado everywhere around November 1st and 2nd. We even had an amazing All Souls Procession where people came dressed up as skeletons with beautiful flowers in their hair. I find Dia De Los Muertos to be a wonderful way to remember your loved ones who have passed.

The art that goes along with this holiday is also quite colorful and fun to make. This morning Max watched as I cut out papel picado with skulls and flowers on it. We then decided to roll one long strip up and make a temporary candle decoration. Papel picado is a great project for any child who knows how to use scissors, younger children can also make some great creations, with a little help.

Check out what we made...

Papel Picado (perforated paper)

materials:
scissors
tissue paper
string
glue stick
pencil/marker (optional)
printable guides (optional)

get to work:

1. Begin by cutting your tissue paper into a square/rectangle (about 8"x 8" works well). Fold in half.

2. If you're using a print out as a guide, you can print some from here.

3. If you're making your own design, you can either do it free hand or draw half of your design along the folded edge of the paper. Remember that you're cutting out the "blank" space, (i.e. anything that might otherwise be colored in such as eyes or the space around your picture).

4. Cut along the folded line.

5. Open your design and then place a small amount of glue along the top border.

6. Lay the string along the top border and fold a small part of the top over the string, securing it to the string.

7. When you're finished, hang it up!

Papel Picado Candle

materials:
scissors
tissue paper
tape/glue
empty glass jar
printable guides (optional)

get to work:

Accordion fold

1. Cut the tissue paper into a long rectangle, making sure to make the width of the paper the same as the jar.

2. Begin folding your paper, but do not fold it in half, fold about an inch or two in and crease.

3. Continue folding your paper, accordion style.

4. Once you've reached the end, fold the paper in half and cut along the fold line.

Make the candle

1. Unfold your creation after you're done cutting.

2. Tape or glue one end to the jar.

3. Roll the jar along the paper. Once the paper is wrapped completely around the jar, tape or glue the paper down again.

4. Place a small candle in the jar and light.

*Please remember to use caution when using candles around children, and paper!
