Halloween scratch art greetings (UPDATE)

Max and I are both off today! Which means we have all day to play and bake and make art together (and recover from our busy weekend at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass!).

This morning Max requested that we make "abstract" art, and I'm sure he knows what that means, so as soon as breakfast ended we got to work making our own Halloween scratch art cards to send to Grandma.

Check them out!

update: This project worked really well at home and not as well with a different tempera paint at work. I encourage you to put a drop of dish soap into your paint before applying it to the paper. This will help it rub off easier.

materials:

black tempera paint
orange crayon
water color paper cut into post card size
paint brush
penny

get to work:

1. Begin by scribbling with the orange crayon on the paper. Cover the paper completely. This is the part that 2 years olds seem to do best!

2. Once you've covered the paper with crayon, paint a layer of black paint over the crayon.

3. Let the paint dry. (You can make this go faster by blow drying the paint.)

4. Take a penny and scratch away on the paper.

5. Turn it over and address it to Grandma with a little note!

This is so awesome! I think I might use this one for our children's activity program in a couple of weeks! Thanks!

Jamie you might also want to try this on foil. Just add a little bit of dish soap (a small drop) to different paints, paint directly on the foil and when it's dry, scratch it off. We will never do this project in my house because working with foil is like nails on a chalk board to me. Ick. But... it's very cool.

This is so great. It is always fun with Scratch Cards Printing and designing.
