Summer Camp Week 1: Paper Bowls

Did you have a favorite project from camp? When I was younger I went to a day camp with my sister and the poor teenagers who begrudgingly signed up to be our counselors for the summer did their best to provide us with fun arts and crafts projects. While the lanyard key chain was fun (and quintessentially "camp"), I had always hoped to do more, I wanted to make projects that would "wow" my folks when the bus dropped me off at the end of the day.

So for today's project I decided to make something a little more "wow" worthy. After all this isn't day camp, it's virtual art camp, and this easy project is sure to impress the folks. I promise...

ages: 4 & up

Paper Bowls

materials:
tissue paper
liquid glue (or Sta-Flo starch)
plastic bowl
plastic wrap
oil (nonstick spray)
scissors
paint brush

get to work:

1. Begin by helping your child cut up the tissue paper into squares. (You'll need at least two sheets)

2. Flip the bowl upside down and spray it with nonstick spray.

3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. (Make it as nice and tight as you can.)

4. Using the paint brush, dip it in the glue and begin to spread it on the plastic wrapped bowl.

5. As you spread the glue, begin placing the squares of tissue paper onto the glue. Continue until completely covered.

6. Repeat steps 4 & 5.

7. Let dry for a few hours.

8. Pull the newly formed tissue bowl off of the plastic bowl once it's dry, trim off an excess plastic wrap (or tuck it down) and you're done!
