Summer Camp Week 1: Paper

For week one of our summer camp we're going to be making some paper themed projects. (What can I say? We're going to start off easy. )

This first project would be a perfect craft for a picnic. It requires very little work, but lots of imagination. Check it out.

ages: 3 and up

materials:

paper plates
scissors
markers/crayons
glue/tape

get to work:
1. Fold the paper plate in half and then open it again.

2. Begin cutting out "teeth" along the edges of the plate. You can cut triangles or cut lots of little strips, really whatever you'd like.

3. Fold the plate in half.

4. Take a second paper plate and cut out some eyes (you'll want to keep a straight line at the bottom of the eyes because you'll be folding this part down and sticking it to the other plate.)

5. Decorate your eyes.

6. Fold the bottom part of the eyes and glue them down or tape them down to your plate. (They should be sticking up, like in the pictures). Make sure to place the eyes somewhere towards the middle of the folded plate, leaving enough room for your hands to hold the back of the plate.

7. Continue to decorate or start playing.

Max has recently gotten into using scissors and this was his second actual cutting project. I like the wonky teeth and that he chose to make his monster a cyclops. He's a little Monsters Inc. obsessed right now, so we spent the evening reenacting scenes from the first movie (he has no idea there's a new one out, shh).

PS
We also made this guy using the same steps as above, except we substituted a piece of 8.5 x 11 card stock for the paper plate. I also cut small finger holes into the back, behind the eyes, so we could slip our fingers in and move the mouth a little easier.
