Mother's Day Gift Idea: Write Mom a Poem

A few weeks ago I helped some of my students compose poems for Poetry Month. One of my four year olds came up with this fabulous poem about her mom. It's sweet and cute and a little embarrassing, just like most things kids say. While the composition is completely her's alone, I did give her some instructions to create this little gem...

PS
Her mom did get to be "fancy" - this little girl was excited about a wedding they were going to attend where the whole family got to be fancy.

materials:
large paper
crayons

get to work:

1. Because this was a poetry unit I did with my students, we first read a few poems to get started. You can read more about that here.

2. After the kids were introduced to a little poetry, I helped them with the format of this particular poem. I told them they would start their poem with a line that introduces their topic. Then they would use the next few lines to describe the topic and repeat the first line again when they were finished, as a way of wrapping it all up.

3. I did the writing for my students because they're young and while some can write, it's easier for them to get their complete thought out when an someone else is helping them. If you want you can have them copy it down in their own hand writing afterward. I also chose to use a big white sheet of paper so that the poem took on this sort of "larger than life" feeling. (Needless to say my students were really excited about writing their poems.)

4. Once the poem is complete, they may decorate it however they wish.
