Mother's Day Gift Idea: Paper Flower Brooch

When I was little my mom always wore these wonderful brooches. They were often gold or bronze with bright little gems inside. Sometimes they were shaped like flowers. I always loved wearing them when I played dress up. She doesn't wear them much these days, perhaps it was an 80s fad, but whenever I see one I think of her and it makes me smile. So in honor of my mom and her fancy brooches, here is a quick and easy flower brooch that you can make for yours.

materials:
4 sheets tissue paper (about 4 inches long)
button
string
scissors
safety pin

get to work:
1. Lay each piece of tissue paper on top of one another and show your child how to make a fan fold with the paper.

2. Once complete, help them cut each end of the folded paper into a point.

3. Tie the middle of the folded paper loosely.

4. Begin to slowly peel apart the pieces of paper, fanning each layer out and making the flower shape.

5. Once your flower is complete, run the string through the button holes and tie a knot in the back of the flower.

6. You can run a safety pin through the string in the back of the flower to complete your flower pin.
