Chinese Hand Drum

Do you celebrate Chinese New Year? At our school we celebrate it complete with a lion dance and paper lanterns. And yet each year it feels like I struggle a bit to find an activity for the kids to make that's  A. easy enough for them and  B. matches the theme. I'd love to make moon cakes with them, but moon cakes with a large class of preschoolers couldn't be as hands on as I'd like.

So we're going to start off easy and see how far we can get with some other Chinese New Year's themed art. First off a small hand drum.

ages: 4 & up

materials:
paper plates (anything like Chinet works best)
red paint
sponge
stapler
corn kernels (or similar)
stapler
yellow string
scissors

get to work:

1. Begin by painting two paper plates. We found using the sponge, you can evenly disperse the paint without soaking the plates.

2. Once the plates are dry poke a hole in the middle of each.

3. Cut about 10-20 pieces of string about 3 inches long. Fold each string in half and pull the folded half through the hole in the plate. Tie off using another piece of string. Repeat with the other side.

4. Put the plates together and staple them shut. Right before you finish stapling, pour about a 1/2 cup of corn kernels into the middle of the plates and seal by stapling.
