Occasionally I have a day where I get to work and realize I don't have a lesson planned. After the long weekend, I found myself physically in the classroom, but mentally still eating pie at home. Days like these call for back ups, and fortunately I have a few good ones. Model magic is a great back up, it's kinda like play dough, but dries nicely and can be colored on, painted or even glued.
Since I have quite a bit of it, I whipped some out along with a cookie cutter, rolling pin and gold paint. Ta-da! Simple ornaments.
materials:
white model magic
cookie cutter
rolling pin
gold paint, or powdered tempera paint
salt
glue (optional)
wax paper/tray
get to work:
1. Roll out the model magic onto the wax paper. Make it nice and flat. Peel it up to make sure it doesn't stick to your surface.
2. Use the cookie cutter to make your shape.
3. Take a little bit of powdered tempera paint and salt and mix them together in a small cup or on the side of the tray/paper. With your finger (or a paint brush) rub the paint onto the model magic.
Alternative: Mix some of the powdered tempera with glue and paint it on with a paint brush.
4. Poke a small hole in the top of the piece and let it dry over night. In the morning you can run a string through it and hang it up!
Alternative:
Leave the piece intact and once dry, glue a small magnet to the back.
