happy election day!

Election Day is finally here and if you're like me, you're happy this election cycle has come to an end. We were inundated with emails, phone calls and flyers! Now we have a pile of flyers, asking us to vote for this proposition or that candidate, piled up high on our kitchen table. Usually I'd throw them in the recycle bin and forget about them, but this year, I saw potential in those flyers, potential for some projects.

Here are a few that I came up with, I'm sure you can think of even more! (Try it, it's quite therapeutic cutting up all those mailers!)

Election flyers are often printed on heavy paper - perfect for masks.

Whirligigs are too simple not to make.

materials:

paper
paper clip
scissors

get to work:

1. Cut a small rectangle from the flyer.
2. About a third of the way down, cut a slit into each side of the rectangle and fold the bottom two thirds of the paper towards the middle, as seen in step 2.
3. Paper clip the bottom of the whirligig.
4. Cut a slit into the top of the whirligig.
5. Bend the top, as seen in step 5.
6. Hold the whirligig up and drop it. Watch it go!

Older children (and adults) can make a simple cup, by weaving strips of the flyers together.  Here's the how to.

Print out any image, place it over a sturdy flyer, cut out the shapes, tape a pencil to the back and ta-da, shadow puppets!
