salad spin-art

Recently a parent at my work found a salad spinner on the street corner (where else would you find one?) and decided to bring it in to see if I could use it. She suggest making spin art. I thought it was a fabulous idea. So with a little bit of playing guess and check, I figured out an easy way to make spin art with the salad spinner and the kids LOVED it.

 materials:

small squeeze bottles (any water bottle with a small spout will do)
tempera paint
water
white card-stock (or regular printer paper)
salad spinner

get to work:

1. Begin by mixing tempera paint and water in the squeeze bottles. I used a 3:1 ratio of water to paint. You don't want your paint to be too runny, but at the same time the more liquid it is, the better it will spread.
2. Set up your salad spinner. (This was the cheapest one I could find on Amazon)
3. Place your paper in the center of the salad spinner.
4. Drop a few drops of your paint/water mixture onto the paper.
5. Cover and spin.
6. Let dry on a flat surface. (This is where the heavier cardstock paper comes in handy, it's less likely to bend at the edges and dries quite well. Likewise watercolor paper would do well too).
