Let me tell you a little bit about our recent visit to Bandon, Oregon. We headed up there over Labor Day weekend to visit with friends and have a little time to relax. While we were dipping our toes in the ocean my husband ran into his neighbor Jennifer, from his childhood (all the way from Kentucky). It was mere happenstance that we not only ran into her, but her friend randomly found the shovel that Max lost when the tide came in. Needless to say it was an interesting series of events.
We met up with Jennifer and her friend Sheila the next day at their house for some blackberry picking and lunch. Sheila, who is an artist, drew our portraits and told us stories about her life over coffee. She also gave Max some books about animals and made sure to send us home with fresh beans, kale seeds and strawberries from her garden.
Afterward Jennifer took us to check out Bandon's awesome and ambitious art/recycling project known as Washed Ashore. The program uses debris that has literally washed ashore on the Oregon coast to make large sea life sculptures which are now/soon to be on exhibition at San Diego's Sea World and the Smithsonian. The pieces are large and incredibly impressive and I suggest if you find yourself in the area you not only check out the project (whose studio you can tour), but also collect a few pieces of debris yourself and try it out. What a wonderful way to bring awareness about the importance of keeping our oceans clean don't you think??
Here are some pictures from our trip:
