Summer Camp Week 2: Paint (and Pastels)

How's your summer treating you thus far? We had about two days of sun before the rain came and made it feel a little less like summer and a little more like fall. And since rain means we're stuck inside, we couldn't do one of the big, messy, outdoor paintings that I was hoping to do. So instead we did a little more of a low key project and played around with watercolors and oil pastels. It was a quick project, but we had fun.

This is what the kids came up with...

Paint and Pastels

materials:
watercolor paper (or large sheet of white paper)
oil pastels
watercolors
paint brush

get to work:

1. Have the children begin by drawing on their paper with the oil pastels. (Drawing shapes and leaving white space in the middle is ideal for when you start to paint).

2. Once they've finished drawing they can then begin to paint. You can ask them what they notice about painting over the pastels - do the lines disappear or remain? Why do they think that is?
