Super Hero Capes

For Max's second Halloween, he and his friends dressed up as The Super Friends. It was rather adorable. And being the ambitious mom that I am (and by ambitious mom I mean "mom who takes on way too many tasks at once), I made his costume. Surprisingly the cape was insanely simple and because I'm not much of a seamstress, it's completely sew-free. This would be a good project for older elementary aged kids or for a parent's craft.

Here's how I did it...

materials:
1 Large men's t-shirt
scissors (make sure they're sharp)
felt (this will be your super hero eblem, so choose your colors accordingly)
iron on adhesive tape
iron

get to work:

1. Begin by laying out the t-shirt on a flat surface. (You may want to iron it, if it's wrinkled).

2. Cut the t-shirt in half leaving the front and back of the shirt intact.

3. Trim off the collar.

4. Trim off the bottom of the shirt.

5. Take the bottom strip of the shirt and pull it out, stretching it. Then lay it at the top of the, now square, piece of cloth leaving about 1/2" of room above it.

6. Lay down the adhesive tape just below the strip of shirt bottom. Fold over the 1/2" of fabric over the strip of shirt and the adhesive tape. Using an iron, iron over the cloth where the adhesive tape is (follow the directions on the adhesive tape box).

7. Now you have a cape and a pull string for your cape.

8. Next take the felt and create your super hero emblem. I made Batman's emblem by printing out a picture and using that as my stencil.

9. Use the adhesive to stick the felt together and then onto the cape.

10. Let cool for a few minutes and then let your child have fun saving the world!
