Sewing on canvas is easier than you think. Especially with a heavy weight needle. It's good practice for children's hand eye coordination and you can create everything from the simplest designs to more intricate and complicated ones.

Ages: 5 & up
tapestry needle
embroidery thread
canvas (any size)
marker
get to work:
1. Begin by asking your child what they'd like to sew on the canvas. Simple shapes are easiest and a good place to start.
2. Turn the canvas over and on the back draw the shape/design in marker. When held up to the light the marker will show through on the other side so that the child can follow the outline.
3. Thread your needle.
4. Starting from the back of the canvas begin to sew. Because these needles make bigger holes, make sure not to have the holes too close to one another or the thread will come off of the canvas.
5. Continue until your design is finished, changing colors of thread if necessary. Tie off and you're done!
alternative:
Paint the canvas before you sew. Make sure that the canvas is dry before you begin to avoid tearing.
