inspired by airport art

We recently spent quite some time in airports and I realized, how little time I spend taking advantage of the beautiful art installations that most airports have these days. While we were waiting for our plane at Oakland Int'l a few weeks ago, I took Max around. We mostly watched planes take off and land, but we also explored some of the recent art exhibits, including one from Studio One, a super cool art studio right by our house!

When I got home and came down from the vacation buzz, I started thinking about other lovely exhibits I've seen in recent years at airports. This exhibit at the Chicago's O'hare got me thinking, how could we make something so bright, whimsical and light?

That's where this latest project comes in - melted crayons on loooong sheets of wax paper. You could hang them above the bed, drape them on the wall or even frame them and have cool art work for your living room.

Check it out yo (sorry too much time with younger siblings)

materials:
old crayons, sans wrappers
knife
cutting board
iron
wax paper
2 towels
ironing board/hard surface

get to work:

1. Adult only- chop up the crayons.

2. Lay a towel on your ironing board.

3. On top of the towel place a long piece of wax paper (3ft - 4ft is pretty good).

4. Measure out another piece of wax paper of equal size.

5. Have your child sprinkle the crayon pieces onto the paper. You can make a design, lines, circles, whatever you'd like.

6. Place the second sheet of wax paper on top of the first.

7. Place the second towel on top of the paper.

8. Adult only -Using an iron on low-med, iron over the surface of the towel. Make sure not to leave the iron in one spot for more than a few seconds. Continue this until the crayons have melted.

9. Once cool, you and your child can hang up your work! I suggest somewhere where light will be able to shine through it, it looks particularly cool above a bed near a window.
