mini pine cone center pieces

The other day we took Max and his friend Ollie out to play in the park. While wondering around, Ollie and I discovered some tiny pine cones. We scooped them up, brought them home and painted them. I wasn't sure what we'd do with the painted cones, but I loved how bright and cheery they looked.

I decided these little cones would make a nice center piece for our Thanksgiving dinner. (Or a great gift to send to grandparents).  We also strung some up with our twinkle lights to add to the Fall decor.

materials:

small pine cones
tempera paint
paint brushes
wax paper

get to work:

1. Go on a nature walk to find your pine cones (the best ones still have some stem on them, so that you can hold it while painting). If you don't have pine cones near you, you can order them here or here.

2. Place a few dabs of tempera paint on your wax paper and begin painting your cones.

3. Once you've painted them, let them dry on the wax paper.

extensions:

Center pieces:
Using some hot glue , glue a candle into a small candle holder. Surround the candle with the painted cones.

Stringing with lights:
Take a long piece of thin string/yarn and wrap it around the cones, tucking the string into each cone's crevasses. Then wrap the string of cones around twinkle lights.
