I've been sticking to the basics the last few weeks, allowing the kids to explore and create while learning about primary colors, patterns and now shapes. This week, we're going to learn about geometric shapes and shapes found in nature.
Let's begin by creating collages using animal shapes. To really emphasize the shape, over the finer details, I chose to use silhouettes of animals versus real pictures.

materials:
scissors
glue
construction paper
get to work:
1. Print the provided printout or use your own images of animal silhouettes.
2. Ask the children to identify a few of the animals. You can help them or let them do it on their own. Explain how even when we can't see the fur or the feathers, we can still identify most animals simply by their "shape."
3. Help the children trace the shape the of an animal using their index and their middle finger.
4. Now they can begin cutting around the animal's "shape" and make their own picture or collage.
You can download these animal silhouettes here.

For older children you might want to provide them with markers so that they can draw the animal's environment or download some free tree images here.
