MLK Day for Preschoolers

Honoring Martin Luther King Jr is tricky when it comes to little kids. Let's be honest, most 3-6 year olds have no concept of race relations in America. While kids certainly are aware that we all look different, most pay little attention to looks and care more about whether that other child wants to share their toy or not.

So when it comes to MLK Day projects for my art class I try to focus on concept that are slightly more tangible for young children. Today's project focuses on how they can make the world a better, kinder place. It's a lesson I borrowed from here. You can start by talking to your child about how MLK wanted to make the world a better place, a kinder place, a nicer place for everyone. Then you can listen to this Ben Harper song where the quote came from, while they work on their piece.

Here is a print out of today's project and a few questions you may want to ask while your child works on this piece:

  • What does "kind" mean?
  • How can we be kinder to others (at school, at home at the park etc.)?
  • Can you think of a time someone was kind to you?
  • How did it feel?
