When it comes to teaching children about shapes, I tend to stick to the easier projects, but this time I wanted to move beyond the basics of basic shapes. That's where this little project comes in, just in time for Halloween/Fall.
Geometric Owls
materials:
scissors
glue stick
multicolored paper
black paper
get to work:
1. Begin by cutting out the feathers. Cut small triangles out of the multicolored paper. Make sure to cut a smaller triangle for the beak out of orange paper. Use black and white paper to cut out two large white circles and two smaller black circles.
2. Cut out an owl shape from the black paper.
3. Show the children the different shapes. Explain to them that with these circles and triangles, they're going to make a colorful owl.
4. Using the glue, begin to stick on the triangle "feathers," beginning at the bottom of the birds wing and working up. This technique is best to get that layering effect of the bird's wing.
5. Finish by gluing on the eyes and beak.
