Tape and Vellum Sun Catchers

I watched this little girl at the garden store the other day play with a vellum pinwheel. She kept yelling for her mom to look at the blue and red shadow it cast on the wall. She was blown away by the idea that a blue and red shadow could even exist. And then I got this idea...

Super simple, easy as pie sun catchers.

materials:
various colors of vellum paper (or 1 ply tissue paper)
pipe cleaner (or wire)
string
packaging tape (or contact paper)
scissors

get to work:
1. Help your child shape the pipe cleaner into a circle.

2. Cut the packaging tape into small strips and lay them over the pipe cleaner covering all of the area in the middle. Don't worry if there is excess tape hanging over the edge, you'll trim it later.

3. Flip over the pipe cleaner so that the tape is sticky side up.

4. Help your child cut the vellum paper into small pieces and lay them on the tape.

5. Once they've finished sticking their vellum paper to the tape, repeat step 2, this time covering the other side of the pipe cleaner circle.

6. Using the scissors trim the tape off the circle and poke a small hole in the top so you can run string through it.
