Vik Muniz inspired rice art

Continuing on with yesterday's Vik Muniz theme, we made a few pictures today using rice. Because I'm working with younger students (3-5), I decided to let them fill in already outlined letters and used dyed rice to make it a little more colorful.

The how to is pretty simple, but if you aren't sure how to dye the rice keep reading.

materials:
white rice
food coloring
vinegar
paper towels
baking sheet
dark paper
glue

get to work:

1. To dye the rice put about 1/4 of a cup of vinegar in a cup or plastic bag with a few drops of food coloring, fill with about 1/2 cup of rice, seal and let sit for a few min.

2. Remove the rice from the mix, drain and lay flat on a paper towel. (I like to put the paper towel on a baking sheet and spread out the rice to dry).

3. Let dry for about 30 minutes (or over night for best results).

4. Now you can get to work making a creation on the dark paper.

5. Use the glue, if you'd like to make more permanent image by gluing the rice down. (Although Muniz often takes photos of his work rather than displaying the actual thing).
