the very haunted house

Every year at Halloween I have my students work together to make a haunted house. We then make little creatures to peak out of the windows and draw bats and trees and full moons to decorate. Last year we made our haunted house complete with a cemetery. This year the kids are a bit younger so I thought I'd get a little help in making the house.

I found this haunted house cut-out on pinterest (where else?). It's from Sarah Jane Studios, home of some very cute projects and print outs for kids along with adorable illustrations. We used this cut out as our guide for making two big houses. Max and I made one at home, that he wanted to fill with scary pictures of his cousins (oh the creativity of a 2 year old) and we made one at school where the children drew witches and ghosts to fill the windows.

materials:

paper
scissors (or if you cut it out, x-acto knife)
glue
tissue paper

get to work:

1. Cut out the design and glue it to a black piece of paper.

2. Cut out the design again, this time with the black paper attached.

3. Glue the tissue paper over the windows (on the back of the paper).

4. Decorate with ghosts, ghouls and other monsters!

alternative:

1. Use the paper as a guide and copy it onto a large piece of paper.

2. If you choose to paint the house, paint it before cutting it out.

3. Once the paint has dried, cut out the design.

4. If you want it to stand up on it's own, glue it to a piece of cardboard with a smaller width than the house itself, but with more length (leave the extra length at the bottom of the house). Bend back the extra bit of cardboard to prop up your house. (Do this once you've finished decorating).

The house my students made, along with a few other projects surrounding it.

The house Max and I made. He didn't want to paint it, so I think it looks more like a church than a haunted house, but he's quite taken with it. See the photos of his cousins that we printed out to hide inside? Spooky no?
