Continuing with our introduction to primary colors, our next project combines the art of beading and dying pasta together. Remember this recipe? It was extremely useful today as we started dying pasta and getting ready to make our primary color necklaces.
materials:
pasta (penne, macaroni etc.)
food coloring (red, yellow and blue)
3 plastic bags
rubbing alcohol
paper towel
yarn/string
cups for separating colors
get to work:
1. First begin by dying the pasta. I dropped about a tablespoon of alcohol into a plastic bag and about 8 drops of red, yellow or blue food coloring. (You might want to experiment with the amount of drops depending on how dark you want the pasta to be.)
2. Drop the pasta into the bag, seal up the bag and roll the bag, coating all of the pasta.
3. Dry the pasta on the paper towel. Repeat until you have all three colors.
4. Once the pasta is dry separate the colors into the cups and begin beading.
alternative:
Once you've made primary color necklaces combine the colors to make secondary colored necklaces. If you want to put your kid to the test, combine primary and secondary colors together and ask them to make a primary color necklace or secondary colored necklace by picking out the right colors from the mix.
*note if you want the colors to come out just right, be sure to use the lightest pasta you can find.
