snakes and sponges

Add a little hissssssssssssssssss to your art.

materials:

glue
mesh netting (I got mine from a bag of small potatoes)
tape
sponge
tempera paint
file folder/cardstock cut into thick strips or paper towel tube
marker
scissors

get to work:

1. Cut the netting so that you can either wrap it around the paper towel tube or spread it out over the paper.
2. You'll want to use the tape to keep the netting in place, so tape down the edges to the tube or paper.
3. Place a small amount of tempera paint on your sponge and begin blotting the paint along the paper/tube.
4. Let the paint dry and remove the netting.
5. If you used the paper towel tube you can skip this step. Otherwise make a line of glue along one edge of the paper and roll the paper up until it's in a cylinder shape. (Placing a marker at the non-gluey edge and rolling in from there, often helps, but I find kids can have trouble with this.)
6. Flatten one end of the cylinder and snip cut a triangle shape to make the snake's mouth.
7. Decorate with eyes and a long snakey tongue.
8. Enjoy!

alternative:
Use paint that sparkles to make it even more snake-like!

Don't throw that away! The netting that holds your
potatoes/pears/peppers etc. makes great scales!

Max decided to give his snake a kiss, (and then he crushed it).
